Venus de Milo: The Icon of Classical Beauty
One of the most famous archaeological discoveries in the world, the Venus de Milo, was unearthed on Milos in 1820. This marble statue of the goddess Aphrodite is now displayed in the Louvre Museum in Paris.

The Catacombs
You can visit the island’s Catacombs, which are among the largest early Christian burial sites in Greece. Dating back to the 1st century AD, these underground chambers provide insight into the early Christian communities on the island.

Located near the village of Tripiti, is a well-preserved marble theater from the Hellenistic period. It overlooks the sea and is still used for cultural performances today.
Best beaches
Milos boasts over 70 beaches, each offering a unique experience due to the island’s volcanic landscape. From dramatic rock formations to crystal-clear waters and hidden coves, there’s a beach for every type of traveler.
Be aware that during summer, especially in July and August, the Meltemia (northern winds) are a common feature across the Cyclades. This causes rough seas, affecting boat trips and making northern beaches less approachable. That means

NORTH BEACHES
- Sarakiniko: The Famous Moon Beach
Known as the “moon beach,” it is a must-visit spot in Milos. Its striking white rock formations create a surreal landscape ideal for stunning photos and cliff jumping—just check the weather first! While it’s not the best choice for swimming or relaxing, visiting during golden hour offers a picturesque setting with fewer crowds, making it the perfect time to enjoy its beauty.
- Firopotamos
Firopotamos is our personal favorite beach on Milos, offering a unique landscape that feels like a postcard come to life. The beach features charming traditional fishing houses, known as sirmata, right by the water, along with a quaint little church that adds to the picturesque vibe.
One of the highlights of Firopotamos is its friendly feline residents. The beach is home to many cats that roam freely, adding an extra layer of charm to your visit. If you’re a cat lover like us, you’ll absolutely adore the company of these playful kitties as you relax by the sea!
3.Alogomandra
Alogomandra Beach in Milos is a quiet, hidden gem just 5 minutes from Papafragkas. Its standout feature is a cave formation that offers shade, making it perfect for a peaceful, scenic escape.
4. Papafragas
Papafragas Beach in Milos is a breathtaking cove with crystal-clear waters, but be cautious—the trail down is steep and can be tricky. It’s best to wear sneakers for a safer descent, as sandals aren’t ideal.
SOUTH BEACHES
1.Fyriplaka
Firiplaka Beach in Milos is a popular spot known for its long stretch of white sand, colorful cliffs, and shallow, crystal-clear waters. It’s great for swimming, sunbathing, and even trying out canoeing for a bit of adventure!
2.Tsigrado
Tsigrado Beach, or else known as the beach with the rope, offers stunning green waters and a secluded, intimate setting. However, the beach is very small, and the descent involves navigating a steep, tricky cliff. Extra caution is needed, making it essential for visitors to wear proper shoes and be prepared for a bit of a challenge getting down.
Ps: If the steep descent to Tsigrado Beach is too challenging, you can opt for a kayak from nearby Firiplaka Beach. It’s a fun and scenic alternative, as the two beaches are quite close to each other.
- Palaiochori
Palaiochori is a unique spot, where the nearby volcanic activity heats the sand so much that the local restaurant, Scirocco, even cooks fish in it! The beach is also known for its colorful rock formations and a lively beach bar, creating a perfect setting for a day out. However, if you’re sensitive to high temperatures, this might not be the best beach for you due to the intense heat.
4.Provatas
Provatas Beach in Milos is a family-friendly spot featuring golden sand and shallow, calm waters, perfect for swimming and relaxing. The beach is organized with umbrellas for shade, making it comfortable for a full day of fun in the sun, and it offers a laid-back vibe that’s great for families.
Top Experiences
1.Take a boat tour
One of the best ways to experience the breathtaking beauty of Milos is by taking a boat tour around the island. Many of the most stunning locations are only accessible by sea, making this an essential part of your visit.
Most people don’t realize that there are two different routes for boat tours in Milos: one exploring the west part of the island and another that takes you around the entire island.
Both tours include a visit to Kleftiko, a breathtaking spot known for its striking white rock formations and crystal-clear waters. Once a pirate hideout, Kleftiko features numerous sea caves perfect for swimming and snorkeling. Each tour offers a unique experience, but visiting Kleftiko is a highlight you won’t want to miss!
A. West side of Milos, Sykia, and Kleftiko
On the west part of Milos, the boat tour includes a visit to the famous Sykia Cave, known for its stunning volcanic landscape featuring white and black rocks, along with a unique hole in the roof that allows natural light to flood in. This route is ideal for those who want to relax while exploring, as the shorter distances between stops provide plenty of time to enjoy each location. Plus, the captain takes a dinghy, allowing you to explore the caves together—a truly fun and memorable experience! You’ll have the chance to soak in the beauty of the scenery and truly unwind during your journey.
B. Around Milos and Polyaigos
On the route around Milos, you have the unique opportunity to visit Polyaigos Island, known for its exquisite blue waters that resemble a natural pool. This tour also includes a stop at Gerakas Beach, which features a stunning sandy landscape framed by impressive cliffs and vibrant greenery, making it a picturesque spot for a quick swim or sunbathing. Of course, Kleftiko is also included in this itinerary, where you can marvel at the breathtaking rock formations. While this route allows you to see more places, be mindful that there’s a stricter timeline for each stop due to the greater number of nautical miles to cover, making it a more fast-paced experience.
A great recommendation for boat tours in Milos is Polco Sailing! They offer fantastic itineraries that let you explore the island’s stunning coastline and hidden gems, making for an unforgettable experience.
2.Visit Sulfur Mines
Visiting the sulfur mines in Milos is an intriguing experience. The abandoned mines showcase the island’s mining history, with colorful mineral deposits and old mining equipment. Located near Adamas, it’s easy to combine this visit with other nearby attractions. It’s a great way to learn about the island’s geology while enjoying beautiful views!
3. Explore the traditional Fishing Villages
A. Klima
Klima is a lovely fishing village in Milos known for its colorful boathouses, or “syrmata,” that line the waterfront. The bright houses create a beautiful scene against the blue sea, making it a great spot for photos. You can visit in the morning or during the golden hour for the perfect lighting and picturesque shots. It’s a charming place to soak in the beauty of the island!
B. Mandrakia
Mandrakia is a charming fishing village in Milos, characterized by its colorful boathouses, “syrmata,” that dot the waterfront. This tranquil spot is perfect for a peaceful escape, where you can enjoy stunning views of the sea. Make sure to visit before the sun sets so you can have a clear view and capture the beauty of the area in your photos.
4.Catch the sunset
For a stunning sunset in Milos, head to Plaka, the island’s charming capital. You can catch the sunset near the church for breathtaking views over the sea and surrounding landscape. If you’re up for it, you can also climb up to the castle for an even more panoramic view, making it one of the most memorable sunset spots on the island.
5.Panigyria
Experiencing a panigyri (traditional festival) on Milos is a cultural highlight you shouldn’t miss. These celebrations, often tied to a saint’s feast day, bring communities together with live music, traditional dances, and feasts of local specialties like ladenia and roasted meats. Visitors are welcome to observe and soak in the vibrant atmosphere, but participation—especially in dancing—should be approached with respect for local customs.
Food and Sweets
- O !Hamos is famous for serving some of the best local meat dishes, but be prepared to wait in line for up to 1.5 hours, as they don’t take reservations. It’s easier to find a table if you go for lunch. Be sure to try the traditional ‘pitarakia’.
- Mikros Apoplous, located near the port of Adamas in Milos, is a fantastic spot for fresh, delicious seafood, offering great views and a relaxed atmosphere by the sea.
- Yialos in Pollonia offers the best seafood experience in Milos, with fresh, expertly prepared dishes. Be sure to try their ceviche for a flavorful treat!
- Avli, located in Plaka, offers a small and cozy atmosphere, resembling a traditional Greek yard, as “avli” means in Greek. The taverna serves delicious Greek cuisine, making it a charming spot for an authentic dining experience.
- Astakas, the only restaurant in Klima, offers the best sunset sea food dinner with breathtaking views of the village’s colorful boathouses and the sea.
- Medusa, located in Mandrakia, is the most traditional fish tavern, set right next to the sea. It’s a great, budget-friendly option offering fresh seafood.
- The next two options are hidden gems, mostly frequented by locals and relatively unknown to tourists. Galanis in Triovasalo and Empourios in the village of the same name, both serve completely traditional cuisine, each offering a unique flavor for an authentic experience.
- Aggeliki for the best ice cream on the island. Don’t forget to try the fondue plate!
- Kivotos in Pollonia is famous for its traditional sweets, which are deliciously rich and full of syrup. Don’t leave the island without tasting their ‘galaktoboureko’.
- Paradosiaka Edesmata is the place to go for the best profiterole and ekmek in Milos. The pistachio-flavored profiterole is a game changer that you won’t want to miss!
